Artist Market - Warmth Reflections and a New Chapter
Tammy Jo Schoppet
Yesterday’s art market was such a bright spot—cold weather and all. It was one of those days where you can genuinely feel community, creativity, and kindness woven through every moment.
This was my fourth event of the year (I average about 1-2 per year), and honestly, I loved every minute of it. I saw familiar faces I hadn’t hugged in years, met people who’ve followed my work online, and chatted with new friends who wandered in simply because something colorful caught their eye. There were moments to catch up with several artists I admire—we share that same creative energy, so it always feels like reconnecting with cousins from the “art side” of the family.
One of my favorite parts of events like this is hearing the stories of visitors who understand the purpose of my pottery. It was the “Calming the Chaos” collection that sparked some beautiful conversations this year. That whole idea of finding beauty within chaos really connected with so many people. Those pieces are now sold out, and while I’m grateful they found their purpose, the connections they sparked will be missed. Pottery has a way of becoming a little doorway to real connection.
And yes—the cold! Only in Modesto does 50 degrees feel like we’re all on an Arctic expedition. I brought a pot of hot water and made a tiny coffee-and-tea warming station. Before long, visitors, artists, and even a couple of bundled-up dogs gathered around. It became this sweet little hub of laughter, warm cups, and shared moments.
There was a point in the afternoon when I stepped back in my booth, looked around, and just took it in—people smiling, artists encouraging each other, shoppers choosing handmade gifts with meaning. It hit me how much joy there is in simply being part of it all. Not rushing around, just enjoying the buzz of the moment.
My booth when I had a free moment...
A fun surprise of the day: I brought my 365 Days of Clay Cups book, and two people told me they still have cups from that original project. One had followed the videos all the way back in 2011. I didn’t expect that chapter of my life to circle back yesterday, but hearing that reminded me how long this creative journey has been—and how many people have walked parts of it with me.
As I’m stepping into this new season—turning 60, preparing my studio for a year of more storytelling, more purpose, and more joy—I’m realizing how important these moments are. They strengthen my “why.”
That’s why, starting in January, I’m excited to relaunch a new Hobby Potter YouTube series called “Making with Meaning.” I’ll be sharing the stories behind each piece I create—not tutorials, but real clay-making moments will still happen. This series is about connection, reflection, and the joy of creating with intention. My hope is to elevate everyday moments with love, joy, and faithful gratitude.
Yesterday’s market didn’t just end the year—it helped start the next chapter with clarity and excitement. And I can’t wait to bring you along for the ride!
Love & Blessings,
Tammy Jo
